What is the Scottish Food Coalition for?
The Scottish Food Coalition has come together to work collectively for food justice. We want to transform our food system in Scotland so that it contributes to everyone’s health and wellbeing, values the work to put food on our plate, supports high animal welfare, and sustains our wildlife, natural resources and environment for generations to come.
We recognise that this requires fundamental changes to how we produce, process, and eat food, and are working together for a just
transition to a better system. We believe there is strength in working collectively - although organisations involved have different priorities, as a Coalition we believe no issue is more important than the others: from worker rights to wildlife, obesity to food poverty, all of these challenges are urgent and can be solved more effectively by looking at the whole system.
What have we achieved so far?
What's coming up?
With the consultation for the Good Food Nation Bill due this year, we are now looking to strengthen the Coalition and involve more
organisations that work on issues of food justice across the board.
We want the public consultation on the Good Food Nation Bill to reflect the importance that food has in our lives, and be truly accessible so that together we can create a democratic food system, that reflects our values rather than be led by the food industry.

What have we achieved so far?
- Published our first report Plenty: Food, Farming and Health in a New Scotland, which was influential in shaping a new narrative about the future of food.
- Secured commitments from three political parties (SNP, Scottish Labour and Scottish Greens) to introduce framework legislation for the food system.
- Hosted a series of events at the Scottish Parliament and the University of Edinburgh with international experts discussing the opportunity of the Good Food Nation Bill and providing inspiration to policy makers and the general public.
- Organised a one day summit of food activists, linking grassroots action with developing national food policy.
- Launched Kitchen Table Talks to get conversations happening in homes, community centres, and other places all over Scotland about the food system.
